13 Breast Surgery Problems

Breast augmentation surgery has an overall risk of complications of 27.6% and 25.8% of patients require re-operation. Some of the breast surgery problems that occur are as follows;

1. Hypertrophic Scarring

After surgery a thick red scar can develop, it is normally raised and visible. It occurs in 5% of patients. It often requires treatment with additional operation or steroid injections on the scar.

2. Capsular Contracture

This is simply the hardening of the area around the implant on the breast. It occurs in the tissue that surrounds both or simply one implant. The tissue usually tightens and causes pain. The breast can look soft and natural at the beginning, but then it becomes firm and looks abnormal. It eventually becomes hard and very painful. The only treatment option in this case is a re-operation that will involve removal of the implant. This problem might occur a few weeks after the implant or a few years later.

3. Rapture or Deflation

This problem usually occurs with gel-filled or saline-filled breast implants. The rapture is simply a tear in the breast implant's outer shell. It occurs when the saline-filled implant leaks from the shell. When the gel-filled implant leaks, a scar tissue will form around the implant. Some breast implants rapture after the first few months after rapture or after a couple of years. The rapture can be caused by compression during the mammogram procedure or simply when the implant ages after a couple of years. It can also be caused by intense physical pressure that causes stress to the breast.

The solution to this problem is simply removal of any ruptured gel-filled or saline -filled implants. If this is not done the problem might get worse.

4. Hematoma

This is a breast surgery problem that occurs when a pocket of blood forms inside the surgery wound. It usually occurs in 6% of patients and normally 3 days after the breast surgery. The symptoms are swelling on the breast, a sharp pain that doesn't go away even after one takes pain relief medication. The treatment involves putting a tube inside the breast in order to drain the blood. Sometimes an operation can be done if the case is too severe. However, if the blood pocket is too small, the body is usually able to drain the blood on its own and no treatment is required.

5. Seroma

This occurs when fluid collects around the implant area. It is usually known as "blister fluid" The fluid has been known to leak and cause swelling or pain. The condition is caused by damage of vessels during surgery, which then causes the leaking. Normally the fluid is usually removed by use of a needle and surgery is not required. However, the use of a needle might also create another hole in the implant, which might cause further problems like rapture.

6. Infection

It usually occurs in 2 - 4% of patients and the cause is usually bacteria. Antibiotics are given to ward off infection after surgery. Infection results to swelling and redness. Sometimes fever occurs too. Anti-biotics can treat the infection, but if it is severe removal of the implant might be required. Some surgeons opt for re-opening the wound and washing the infected areas, but this might not work sometimes. When an implant removal is done, healing has to take place before another implant is put.

7. Wound separation

This is also known as dehiscence, which is a rare problem, but still happens after breast surgery. It occurs within the first two weeks after surgery. The wound simply separates, resulting to an open wound. It is usually treated by simply using Steristrips to close the open incision. Sometimes additional surgery might be required.

8. Mondor's Disease

This is simply an inflammation of the blood vessels that are found under the breast surface. This problem occurs in 1% of patients. Luckily, this condition requires no treatment and can go away after some time on its own.

9. Skin Rash

This happens after surgery but can be treated quickly using some medication. It is a normal occurrence and occurs in some patients while it doesn't occur on others.

10. Itching

This can happen especially during the wound healing process. It can be quite uncomfortable but eventually it stops.

11. Abnormal appearance in size

Sometimes the breast sizes might not match. Sometimes this can be solved by another operation if it is really too obvious. But if the difference is slight then living with it is advised.

12. Higher Cost

Breast surgery is very much costly around 3500-8000 USD which is very much higher and again many risk still there.

13. Require Special Time for This

You need to spare special time of doctor appointment, arrange operation time, after surgery checkup and all time you have to assign to get this done which may be somewhat no easy to get from busy schedule.

There are more problems, but the above ones are the most common.
